Feels like AC when you use ice cubes - a little noisy
I bought this unit from Lowe's for $148. I also bought a Supentown 608R from Amazon Swamp Cooler for $99. The Supentown maybe cools the air 3 degrees cooler. The KuulAire about 6 degrees cooler and it blows harder - just a little noisier, but not bad. I gave it 5 stars because comparatively speaking to other swamp coolers - you get way more for your money using this cooler. It works amazing with ice. I suggest you buy 4 or 5 of the 2 inch rubber ice cube trays off Amazon to go with this product. In my opinion this is the best swamp cooler for the money. Very easy to fill and add ice. You can also see the pump in action as it flows the water to the top of the cooler and trickles down the radiator - put your hand in it and you can get an idea of the water temperature and if you need to add more ice or not. The Supentown doesn't do that - not the model I listed anyway.
Works well, but leaked. Easy fix.
After three days of use, mine suddenly changed its sound a bit and started to leak water out of, of all places, the power cord grommet. As it turns out, the water never got close to bare wires or electrical connections, but it got my attention.
I unplugged it, removed the three screws in the back and pulled off the back panel and the attached water pad. The hose from the pump runs right along (and is tied to) the power grommet, so it looked like a leak at the top of the hose was the problem. I removed the single screw holding the hose to the top fitting and found that it had been folded under during installation and had inevitably split. I was able to trim off the damaged end, leaving barely enough hose to reattach. I've probably got the same size tubing in my garage, so replacing it would have been easy, too.
Before I closed it up, I also retrieved an extra(?) plastic clip and screw from the bottom of the tank.
I guess those Chinese kids get...
It works well so far
So far this cooling unit has worked well. We use it in a room that is usually warmer than the rest of the house. It makes the room cooler and blows a lot of air. We use it along with AC, so I'm not sure how well it would cool by itself. I like that it is easy to fill with water, ice, or even ice blocks. It had a funny plastic smell when first used. I don't notice it so much now. Have not yet noticed any dampness in the room, but the humidity here is low in the summer.
