A nice suprise! + First year update!
January 20, 2012 (See below for January 8, 2013's One Year Update)
We are finding that this is definitely a 5-Star purchase. We love the triple-layered stainless steel cooking pot (which both eliminates the health issues related to non-stick coatings and, at the same time, reduces sticking) and the stainless steel vegetable/meat steaming insert. We were a bit hesitant about ordering a 5-Cup rice maker for just one or two people, but as it turns out the measuring cup that comes with the product is smaller than standard and even when cooking for one person, two of these 6-ounce scant cups is hardly more than one person can use in a couple of days.
Now for a few things that may not be shortcomings for many, but which might be helpful to know about in advance:
1.) When you remove the cooking pot from the unit, the lid remains attached to the top of the cooker. Any standard 2-quart lid will cover the rice pot perfectly so for us this is a non-problem...
great for cooking all grains
My Oyama rice cooker is so wonderful. Of course it makes wonderful rice, but it also did a great job with wheatberries & ryeberries which are very tough (but very healthy). It is quite easy to clean, I just put an inch of water in the bottom and gently scrape with my bamboo spoon and everything comes right off. It did smell of machine oil when it arrived but I washed the bowl and the stainless steel inner lid (which removes quite easily - just pull and it comes off and just as easily pops back on). And I just made polenta which came out great. Not having to stand over a pot to make polenta is brilliant. And oatmeal, did I mention oatmeal? Again, perfect. And the little plastic piece (on the side) which catches condensation also easily snaps on and off. The directions were a bit confusing, I wasn't sure how I could take off the steel inner lid liner, but I was brave and just pulled and it came right off, no harm done. It does produce a stream of steam so you probably don't want to use...
love this rice cooker!
I ordered this rice cooker because I did not want to use my existing one with a non-stick surface any longer (toxic issues), and was glad to see Amazon offers several stainless options. This rice cooker is well made, makes perfect rice, even seems to compensate somewhat when I add a bit too much or too little water. It cleans up quite well, even though there are a few places to wipe down, it is still fairly easy. I ordered the 5-cup which is a good size for my husband and me, and it is a cute design. I totally love it!
